Why an Off-Season Wedding in Maine Works Better Than You Think
Most Maine weddings happen between June and September, for good reason, but that also means the busiest, most expensive months are the ones everyone’s competing for. A number of couples have found that an off-season wedding here works just as well, sometimes better, and one of our own real weddings proves it directly.
A real March wedding, not a hypothetical
On March 28, 2025, Chloe and Griffin celebrated a 103-guest wedding at Village by the Sea, entirely indoors, with their reception in the Maine Ballroom. It wasn’t a smaller, quieter version of a summer wedding. It was a full 103-guest celebration that happened to take place in March instead of July.
What’s actually different off-season
The obvious change is weather, an outdoor pergola ceremony isn’t realistic in Maine in January. What replaces it is an indoor ceremony in the Maine Ballroom, followed by the same reception you’d have in summer, dancing, dinner, the whole night. The room doesn’t know what season it is.
What you gain: more date availability, since you’re not competing with every other couple for the same eight Saturdays in July and August; often more flexibility on pricing and package details, since off-season dates aren’t in the same demand; and a quieter property generally, fewer other weddings and events competing for the same weekend.
The resort doesn’t close for winter
A condominium resort built around suites rather than standard rooms holds up differently in the off-season than a seasonal motel does. The indoor heated pool, hot tub, fitness center and game room are open year-round, not just June through September, so a wedding weekend in November still has a place for guests to relax that isn’t just their suite. Who an off-season wedding suits
Couples who want a bigger property with more flexibility on their exact date. Couples who’d rather spend on the details of the day than on peak-season pricing. And couples who genuinely like Maine in the colder months, the coast in November has its own quiet appeal that a lot of summer visitors never see.
It’s not the right fit for a couple set on an outdoor pergola ceremony specifically, that part is genuinely seasonal. But for everything else, the ballroom, the suites, the amenities, an off-season wedding here is the same wedding, on a different date.
