White buildings on a grassy rise at Village by the Sea under a clear blue sky in Wells, Maine

Our story

Not a hotel that
calls itself a resort.

Village by the Sea is a condominium resort. Every suite here is individually owned and individually decorated by that owner, which is why no two are alike, why the photographs on this site are of real units rather than a show room, and why guests who find one they love tend to ask for it by number.

Room to stretch out and relax.

Instead of small standard rooms, the property is made up of spacious one- and two-bedroom condominium suites. A two-bedroom here is about 1,260 square feet, offering an actual apartment-sized vacation home with a full kitchen, living and dining rooms, two bathrooms and a private deck.

That changes what a stay looks like. You cook breakfast instead of queuing for it. You do laundry mid-week. The kids go to bed behind a closed door while the adults stay up. It is closer to borrowing a friend’s place on the coast than to checking into a hotel.

The marsh out back

The resort sits on eleven acres bordering the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge and its tidal salt marsh, a short distance from Wells Beach and midway between Ogunquit and Kennebunkport. The egret on our logo isn’t decorative, egrets work the shallows behind the property, and the quiet pleasure of sitting on your own deck watching them is a large part of why people come back.

Choosing your suite

We’re a three-floor property with no elevator, so where you land matters more than it would elsewhere. Families with young children usually prefer a ground-floor unit with a patio, easy in and out, no stairs with a stroller. Guests who want quiet tend to ask for a third-floor unit, where nobody is walking around overhead, and accept the stairs as the price.

Because every unit is owner-decorated, we grade them honestly into three levels rather than pretending they’re identical. Comfort units are budget-friendly and spacious. Deluxe units have been thoughtfully refreshed. Premium units have had the most updating and are our most current. None of them are new construction, and we’d rather say so up front than have you discover it at check-in.

More than a place to sleep

Alongside the suites there’s a full function and banquet facility, the Maine Ballroom and smaller meeting rooms, which hosts weddings, rehearsal dinners, showers, reunions and meetings. Because the guest rooms and the ballroom sit on the same eleven acres, a wedding party can spend an entire weekend here without anyone getting in a car.
